The study concerns the psycho-social mechanisms and antecedents of two risky driving behaviours: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) and riding with drinking or intoxicated drivers (RWDD). The aim is to develop a comprehensive model explaining DUI and RWDD, taking into account both cognitive antecedents and social and coping skills. An on-line questionnaire was submitted to 150 young adults (aged 19-30) about the following subjects: being involved and having intention to engage in DUI and RWDD, perceived vulnerability and severity, attitudes, risk representation, normative beliefs, locus of control, coping strategies and cognitive and social skills (e.g.,problem solving, creative and critical thinking, assertiveness). Data were analyzed through structural equation modelling. Results indicated that, on the one hand, cognitive antecedents were strongly related with intentions and, on the other hand, skills and strategies influenced the adoption of behaviours. These findings may be useful in designing more effective preventive interventions for DUI and RWDD
