This paper investigates the link between inward FDI and local development in Italy. The empirical analysis is based on a new firm-level dataset built by the author through survey interviews. A multiple-choice questionnaire has been sent to the whole population of multinational enterprises (MNEs) belonging to the Comitato Investitori Esteri of Confindustria in the period September-November 2009. With a reply rate of 77%, we document the experience of 23 MNEs with local affiliates in Italy. Particular attention is devoted to the strategic drivers behind the internationalization path, and the impact of inward FDI on local income and the accumulation of capital, technology and human capital
