This paper presents the initial results of participatory research on biodiversity education conducted with two fourth-grade primary school classes in Milan. Through an experiential and place-based approach, mediated by a toolkit for outdoor exploration conceived as a democratic pedagogical device, the children become co-authors of their own investigations. The experience shows how the decentralised role of adults promotes agency, motivation and a more equitable distribution of power in knowledge production in educational processes.
