The paper offers a critical pedagogical reading of the relationship between citizenship education, transversal skills, and vocational education and training (VET/IeFP) in light of the most recent institutional frameworks in this field. While these frameworks, on the one hand, recognize the centrality of socio-emotional, relational, and democratic dimensions in education, VET is still often interpreted through a neoliberal rationality focused on employability, adaptability, and performance. The contribution highlights this tension and proposes rethinking vocational education through the lens of situated learning, framing it as a space where competencies, professional subjectivity, and democratic citizenship are co-constructed. By bridging the gap between technical training and conceptual knowledge, VET pathways can move beyond the risk of perpetuating systemic inequalities, instead emerging as intrinsically democratic spaces aimed at fostering critical, self-aware, and socially responsible professional subjectivities. What is ultimately at stake, therefore, is not simply the addition of civic content to curricula, but rather a deeper questioning of the very notions of subject, work, and democracy that are produced within educational pathways themselves.
