The chapter considers the perspective of animal welfare in relation to the sustainability goals, with particular reference to social issues in the perimeter of the One Health approach. In order to analyse the topic, the position of animals in the Italian legal system is assumed as the starting point, with specific reference to the Constitution of the Italian Republic: approved in December 1947 and entered into force on 1 January 1948, it was lately modified by Constitutional Law 1 February 2022, No. 1. Other sources of the Italian legal system are then taken into consideration. The aim underlying the research is to verify if sustainability goals as outlined by the Agenda 2030 can include the position of animals as individuals.
