Organizational culture has long been a crucial topic in organizational studies and management literature, seen as a key determinant of organisational performance and competitiveness. Critical scholars have raised concerns about the ‘dark side’ of the concept, also implying its inherent risks of manipulation, of constituting power imbalances, reinforcing inequalities and marginalisations. Assuming a psychological point of view, we analyse the meaning and the ‘delicacy’ of organizational culture, highlighting some points of attention that a critical perspective should encourage to assume a more responsible stance and practical use of the concept.

Abstract

Organizational culture has long been a crucial topic in organizational studies and management literature, seen as a key determinant of organisational performance and competitiveness. Critical scholars have raised concerns about the ‘dark side’ of the concept, also implying its inherent risks of manipulation, of constituting power imbalances, reinforcing inequalities and marginalisations. Assuming a psychological point of view, we analyse the meaning and the ‘delicacy’ of organizational culture, highlighting some points of attention that a critical perspective should encourage to assume a more responsible stance and practical use of the concept.
