We propose a revised version of Peters’ formula for the coalescence time-scale of binaries due to the emission of gravitational waves. The new formula is simple, but correctly models the eccentricity evolution and strong gravity effects such as spin. We show several examples where a more accurate time-scale leads to significantly different results.

Abstract

We propose a revised version of Peters’ formula for the coalescence time-scale of binaries due to the emission of gravitational waves. The new formula is simple, but correctly models the eccentricity evolution and strong gravity effects such as spin. We show several examples where a more accurate time-scale leads to significantly different results.
