In peripheral areas, complex educational needs emerge from the youth from immigrant backgrounds who live there. These include the needs of community, rendered even more critical by the instability of life in contemporary towns, the transience of diasporic migrants’ experiences and the pandemic that forced the closure of all community spaces. More than ever, educators and pedagogical experts need to rethink ways of activating and engaging young people, starting by reinterpreting the construct of active citizenship as open, flexible, and intercultural. Insights from in-depth interviews conducted with educators during project AMIF 3477 Abitare insieme show how a reflective approach to these issues contributes to ensuring that educators themselves can grasp the “lived experiences” of citizenship scattered throughout the locality and make them levers of construction and participation in inclusive and resilient communities.
