Velieri di Camogli: immagini del mare a confronto

The contribution compares the image of the sea transmitted by a series of paintings made in the nineteenth century that portray sailing ships of shipowners of Camogli, collected in the local Museo Marinaro Gio Bono Ferrari and in the sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Boschetto. The paintings collected in the museum are intended to enhance the qualities of the ships and to show the social role played by their owners. The paintings collected in the Sanctuary are ex-votos, offered to the Marian temple in memory of episodes that have jeopardized the safety of sailors. These are opposing visions of the sea, on the one hand a source of wealth and social pride, and on the other a source of danger; the confrontation makes it possible to bring out how "the idea of landscape represents [...] a way in which some Europeans have represented to themselves and to others the world around them and their relations with it, and through which they have commented on social relations" (Corgrove 1990, 23).

Il contributo mette a confronto l’immagine del mare trasmessa da una serie di quadri eseguiti nel XIX secolo che ritraggono velieri di armatori di Camogli, raccolti nel locale Museo Marinaro Gio Bono Ferrari e nel santuario di Nostra Signora del Boschetto. I quadri raccolti nel museo sono volti a esaltare le doti dei bastimenti e a mostrare il ruolo sociale svolto dai loro proprietari. I quadri raccolti nel Santuario sono ex-voto, offerti al tempio mariano a ricordo di episodi che hanno messo a repentaglio l’incolumità dei marinai. Si tratta di visioni contrapposte del mare, da una parte fonte di ricchezza e di orgoglio sociale, dall’altra di pericolo, il confronto permette di far emergere come “l’idea di paesaggio rappresenta […] un modo in cui alcuni europei hanno rappresentato a se stessi e agli altri il mondo attorno a loro e le loro relazioni con esso, e attraverso cui hanno commentato le relazioni sociali” (Corgrove 1990, 23).
