Abstract

Global markets require a deep transformation of corporations development policies where product and process innovation play a primary role to supply an ever-changing market demand. The links between time, space and competitive advantage become very tied and corporate competition needs new policies and strategies. The global corporation has revolutionized the basic functions of research, production and sales creating business organization (network) characterized by competitive alliances and integration of operating units, even with competitors. In the global economy the knowledge production becomes then the critical competitive factor. Therefore the knowledge production generates urban aggregation centres polarized in those cities where the intangible consumption promotes the attraction of people, capital and ideas. The urban aggregation centres of knowledge production and intangible consumption classify global cities and urban areas according to new different development patterns, measured by conventional metrics (number of inhabitants, per capita income, etc..) and non-conventional metrics, based on urban world competitiveness.
