Vela d'altura: barriere abbattute e barriere persistenti

This article aims to underline how deep sea sailing and its narration have contributed to renew the image of marine spaces and its protagonists promoting images that stimulate changes within society. Deep sea sailing as sport activity has questioned the idea of nationality as essential element on which human communities are based. Moreover, it has shown how specific situations and conditions are common at sea for present and past sailors, breaking the modern concept of time absoluteness.It has also challenged stereotypes of maritime activities as masculine sport and has facilitated the idea gender equity both in this sport and in society. Finally, it has helped to promote the idea of sports and social inclusiveness. On the other hand, a sort of psychological and cultural obstacle seems to divide the sailors' community from the rest of society. This distance seems to exemplify most famous regattas protagonists’ deeds and thoughts while highlighting their persuasive role in society.

Il contributo intende sottolineare come la pratica della vela sportive d’altura e la sua narrazione, abbia contribuito a rinnovare l’immagine degli spazi marini e di chi li frequenta, immagine capace di favorire il cambiamento in seno alla società. In particolare ha contribuito a scalfire l’idea che la nazionalità sia una un elemento imprescindibile su cui basare le comunità umane; ha mostrato come in mare si verifichino condizioni che accomunano i naviganti di un tempo a quelli attuali incrinato l’idea di assolutezza del tempo; ha favorito la rottura della barriera che divideva le donne dalle attività marinare facilitando l’idea della necessità dell’equità di genere anche nella società; ha contribuito a promuovere l’idea d’inclusività sportiva e sociale. Permane una barriera psicologica e culturale che divide la comunità dei marinai dal resto della società, una barriera che però contribuisce a rendere esemplari le imprese dei regatanti più famosi e dunque ad acuire il loro ruolo persuasivo in seno alla società.
