The recent regulations of the MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research) and ANVUR (Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems) have been aimed at fully including Italy in the European Higher Education and Research Area and in the European Higher Education Area. Due to the European requirements, our traditional research Doctorates are now facing many challenges. The need to measure up to internationalization and an inter-disciplinary approach, but also with an inter-sectorial outlook, connected to the industrial Doctorate and to the public-private relationship, has to be remembered. The ‘quiet’ revolution of the Doctorate, which started a long time ago with the Bologna Process, is radically transforming the questions that education, understood as a theoretical-practical science, has to ask itself as soon as possible
