The introduction of mandatory pilotage for ships navigating through straits used for international navigation outlines a delicate legal question, because at international level a clear normative is lacking, that recognizes the coastal States the right to declare mandatory this service as a measure to protect the marine environment. This article is focused on the introduction by some coastal States of national legislation envisaging a mandatory pilotage service in the straits under their jurisdiction.
