The microbial characterization of the different granulometric fractions of the atmospheric particulate revealed significant presence of culturable bacteria and an unexpected diversity. Particularly, in the sole course fraction of summer particulate we isolated 403 bacterial strains which represent almost half of the colonies grown sampling more than 50 m3 of air. The number of total culturable bacteria can be estimated as 16 CFU/m3, corresponding to 3.2 x 105 CFU per g of particulate matter. Among these isolates we individuated 29 different operational taxonomic units.

Abstract

The microbial characterization of the different granulometric fractions of the atmospheric particulate revealed significant presence of culturable bacteria and an unexpected diversity. Particularly, in the sole course fraction of summer particulate we isolated 403 bacterial strains which represent almost half of the colonies grown sampling more than 50 m3 of air. The number of total culturable bacteria can be estimated as 16 CFU/m3, corresponding to 3.2 x 105 CFU per g of particulate matter. Among these isolates we individuated 29 different operational taxonomic units.
