The inspiration of the paper is an ongoing collaboration with St. Mary's Hospital Research Center, Montreal (Canada). There, an interdisciplinary group of researchers, has been studying for many years the relationships between the so-called three Ds, i.e.Dementia, Depression and Delirium in elderly population. The three D's are typically measured by different psychiatric scales and they may be considered as latent variables, i.e. variables which are not directly observable. However, nobody has never applied the latent variable framework to this kind of data, neither LISREL nor PLS-PM. Thus, there is no compelling underlying theory to guide the choice between reflective or formative measurement models.
