After 1978, FDI to China increased rapidly and, in 1995, it became the second largest recipient of FDI after the US, and the largest among developing countries. Given these impressive figures, an interesting line of inquiry is to analyse the strategic choices that foreign enterprises face in “entering the dragon”. Following this line of argument, the aim of the present paper is to provide a general framework to discuss the strategic questions that guide Italian enterprises in entering the dragon.

Abstract

After 1978, FDI to China increased rapidly and, in 1995, it became the second largest recipient of FDI after the US, and the largest among developing countries. Given these impressive figures, an interesting line of inquiry is to analyse the strategic choices that foreign enterprises face in “entering the dragon”. Following this line of argument, the aim of the present paper is to provide a general framework to discuss the strategic questions that guide Italian enterprises in entering the dragon.
