A diagnostic method for ion minority concentrations, based on the propagation of ion Bernstein waves (IBW), is analysed theoretically and verified experimentally. The results obtained are compared with those provided by the neutralized ion Bernstein waves (NIBW)based diagnostic, as used in previous experiments. © 1995 IOP Publishing Ltd.
