Da artigianato a mestiere d'arte: il ricamo-moda a Milano

Is it possible to find new interpretations of fashion embroidery, leaving aside the aesthetic ones? In answering this question the author highlights the virtuosity that characterizes the trade of the craft embroider and her diverse forms of craftsmanship. Such virtuosity emerged during the ethnographic observation of the sequences that make up the production chain of fashion embroidery. With the emergence of designer luxury ready-to-wear clothing, embroidery has evolved into decoration, leaning towards materials and colours rather than techniques of execution. This requires the embroider to put a great deal of investment in innovation. Even the technical aspect of embroidery does not rule out social relations. The embroider must know how to maneuver between two kinds of network relations: the critical ones with the fashion designers – their main customers – and the crucial ones with the suppliers

È possibile individuare nuove interpretazioni del ricamo per la moda, mettendo provvisoriamente fra parentesi quelle estetiche? È basandosi su questa argomentazione, che l’autrice mette in luce il virtuosismo tecnico che caratterizza il mestiere del ricamatore artigianale e le sue diverse forme di manualità. Tale virtuosismo è emerso, progressivamente, attraverso l’analisi etnografica delle sequenze in cui si articola la catena operativa di un ricamo per la moda. Con la nascita del prȇt-à-porter di lusso degli stilisti, il ricamo si è trasformato sempre più in decorazione, spostando l’accento sui materiali e sui colori, più che sulle tecniche di esecuzione. Ciò ha richiesto – e richiede tuttora – al ricamatore un notevole investimento nella ricerca innovativa. L’approccio in termini di tecniche non esclude le relazioni sociali. Il ricamatore deve sapersi abilmente muovere fra due principali reti di relazioni: quelle determinanti, con gli stilisti – che sono i suoi principali clienti – e quelle indispensabili con i fornitori
