This article represents a revised version of a Position Paper prepared for the Rockfeller Foundation, network on Health and Human Resources (1994). Conceptual issues as well as research findings on the relationship between social capital and health are discussed, in order to focus on social factors influencing the health conditions of a population . Then two relevant case studies are presented in which these factors are taken into account in organizing the health system at the local level.
