The essay presents the results of a study on the iconography of Prometheus Bound in modern art, covering the period from the 16th to the 19th century. The investigation focuses speciÿcally on the depiction of Prometheus in chains, aiming to identify possible literary echoes of Aeschylus’ tragedy. The text examines signiÿcant paintings, engravings, and drawings within the extensive body of works identiÿed, which are listed in the catalogue included in the conclusion. Three speciÿc iconographies are recognized (Prometheus lying on the ground tormented by the eagle; Prometheus seated tormented by the eagle; Prometheus in nature), as well as three recurring character traits (Prometheus patiens, Prometheus triumphans, Prometheus titanic). This study offers an original contribution to art history and the reception of the Promethean myth.
