The article describes the cosmopolitan and inclusive approach of Leonard Covello (1887-1982), a pioneer of of hospitality and inclusion pedagogy of the Italian community of East Harlem, NYC in the first half of the 20th century. Covello’s personal and professional training was influenced by both John Dewey’s thinking and by his migrant experience; both influenced the design of community and democratic educational practices pursued at Benjamin Franklin High School, an experimental school where he was headmaster from 1934 to 1956. The community centered school directed by Covello attracted the marginalized of all ages and ethnicities in East Harlem, becoming the catalyst center for the development of the democratic spirit in the subtrainingurban urban fabric of New York to counteract the negative social, reasons for alienation and social dissociation.

Abstract: L’articolo descrive l’approccio cosmopolita e inclusivo di Leonard Covello (1887-1982), pioniere della pedagogia dell’accoglienza e dell’inclusione della comunità italiana di East Harlem, NYC nella prima metà del XX secolo. La formazione personale e professionale di Covello risentì tanto del pensiero di John Dewey quanto della sua esperienza di migrante; tali influssi incisero nella progettazione di pratiche educative comunitarie e democratiche perseguite alla Benjamin Franklin High School, scuola sperimentale di cui fu preside dal 1934 al 1956. La community centered school diretta dall’italoamericano attirò gli emarginati di ogni età ed etnia di East Harlem diventando il centro catalizzatore dello sviluppo dello spirito democratico nel tessuto urbano periferico di New York per contrastare le forze sociali negative che generavano alienazione e dissociazione sociale.
