This essay aims to reflect on recent changes in educational historiography and, in particular, on historical research relating to educational materiality. It also takes into consideration new research in the field of school and educational heritage, which is now well established both abroad and in Italy. The article then considers the case of the Umberto I di Savoia school in Milan, analysing the evolution of the names given to spatial and architectural elements. This evolution shows, in particular, how during the Fascist period, the spaces within the school were renamed according to the principles of government propaganda.
