The aim of this paper is to compare personal deixis, mainly self-reference and subjectivity, in relation to linguistic intersubjectivity, in Indo-European languages and in East Asian languages, with a focus on Japanese. The approach is based on the theorical framework of emancipatory pragmatics, especially of ba-pragmatics, that seems to complement existing mainstream pragmatic theories.
