Aim. This study aims at a preliminary analysis of the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Borderline Personality Disorder Check list (BPDCL), a self-report instrument designed to assess the patients' burden of complaints about borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in the previous month. Methods. Twenty-five BPD patients, 48 non-BPD patients and 39 nonclinical volunteers were administered the SCID-II, the BPDCL, and SCL-90-R; a subgroup of these patients also completed a questionnaire for the assessment of defensive array (REM-71) and the Borderline Syndrome Index. Internal consistency of the scale and correlation indexes of BPDCL total score with all criterion measures were assessed and BPDCL total score was compared among the 3 groups of subjects involved in the study. Results. Our results suggest that the Italian version of the BPDCL is a promising tool for the assessment of the patient's perception of severity of BPD symptoms. Conclusion. Further study is necessary, through sample enlargement, for the investigation of factor structure and sensibility to change in psychotherapy.
