Analyzing the phenomenon of academic precariousness necessarily requires looking at the interdependence among the social structure and logics of a specific academic field, the building of social trajectories in it, and the competition among different principles of vision and division about the role of (public) university. Thus, by adopting a genealogical and relational perspective, the paper aims to reflect upon the more recent university policies in Italy and to provide a frame to interpret them, focusing on how neoliberal ideas, while changing over time the criteria to reach tenure, have been also differently embodied by scholars of four different generations, affecting their ways of understanding, perceiving and experiencing the academic life and the sense of precariousness.

Abstract
