This essay deals with the life and works of the famous British military historian Michael Howard, born 1922, focusing on his work as a member of the British Committee on the Theory of International Politics. Sir Michael Eliot Howard is a highly esteemed scholar in English speaking countries, but almost unknown in Italy. Of his more than twenty books only two has been translated. Among his most renowned works must be remembered “The Franco-Prussian War”, a still unmatched critical account of that conflict, and the English translation and edition of “On War” (“Vom Kriege”) by Carl von Clausewitz. The analysis of Howard’s writings proves that his in depth sight managed to set military history well inside general history and, in fact, becomes of primary importance to the understanding of general history.
