This essay reconstructs the main events related to peacekeeping, peace enforcing and peace support operations the Italian Army, Navy and Air Force had undertook from 1950 to 2008. In that space of time Italian armed forces took part to fifty five missions of that kind overseas. If we add rescue missions and missions in support of scientific expeditions or other kind of missions with employment of military men or means, we reach a total of more than one hundred and fifty missions. What the analysis shows is that Italy has benne using this kind of mission to find an adequate role in the international system, the more so after the end of the Cold War.
