Since the 1990s, there has been an increasing focus on the social impact generated by organizations operating in the non-profit, public and private sectors. Out of many measurement methodologies that have emerged over time, the social return on investment (SROI) has come to light as one of the most successful approaches for assessing impact. This is primarily due to its capacity to offer quantitative evidence of intangible elements, leading to an increasing recognition at both academic and professional levels. However, the academic and practical application of SROI has not been constant over the years, generating a debate on its actual strength and functionality. This article aims at identifying the potential and limitations of SROI through providing a systematic analysis of the literature generated since its initial use by the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (REDF) in 1996. In particular, the literature review enables the identification of the main functions of the model, its major limitations and it also identifies the key research perspectives to further explore ways of representing blended value.
