In the light of the recent improvements introduced with the new European Union’s Regulation on geographical indications (EU) 1143/2024, and especially considering the introduction of an article on sustainability, research on geographical indications should consider the complexity of the practices that characterize this quality scheme. This contribution aims at proposing some research directions that might be helpful to the evaluation of geographical indications as an instrument to enhance sustainability.
