The article is an overview of the private psychotherapy training system in Italy. The relationship between professional competence and psychotherapist clinical intervention is described as based upon three elements: treatment methods, psychotherapist variables, patient-therapist relationship: the literature concerning each element gives the reader an update picture of the contemporary problems. The relationship between professional competence and training and how to implement the basic issues of a good clinical competence is the next step of the analysis, followed as last section by the outline of some general guidelines for more evidence-based training in psychotherapy
