What kind of interest could oppose freedom of expression? Just a simple reference to human dignity seems to be problematic. The normative theory of equal respect might be a more suitable theoretical base to lead the reflection. What can be considered adverse to equal respect? An example might be the ‘hate speech’. Anyway, normative interventions oriented towards limiting the ‘hate speech’ are nonetheless problematic in a liberal society: the positive symbolic message of precepts must be accompanied by strongly selective applications, as a result of a ‘practical reasonableness’.
