The Demographic Asset (DA) of a country consists of the amount of future for its population: it is calculated as the sum of the future of its members. Considering the DA of the European Union, this paper aims to evaluate the quality of its dynamics (whether it depends from natural and/or migration balance) and of its structure (the balance between the years of “debt” – devoted to education and retirement - and the years of “credit” – devoted to work). The results show that it is not important whether the demographic potential of a population increases or decreases, but how the items forming the dynamic are consistent, and moreover how the components of “debt” and “credit” balance.

Abstract
The Demographic Asset (DA) of a country consists of the amount of future for its population: it is calculated as the sum of the future of its members. Considering the DA of the European Union, this paper aims to evaluate the quality of its dynamics (whether it depends from natural and/or migration balance) and of its structure (the balance between the years of “debt” – devoted to education and retirement - and the years of “credit” – devoted to work). The results show that it is not important whether the demographic potential of a population increases or decreases, but how the items forming the dynamic are consistent, and moreover how the components of “debt” and “credit” balance.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
