Abstract

Sport activity is undergoing an increasing process of ‘technologization’. The use of innovative technologies to improve the performance of élite athletes like neurotechnologies, augmented reality, and even the metaverse is changing the way athletes train and relate to their sport activity. In Europe, this occurs within a specific ethical vision of sport as laid down by the Council of Europe, which aims at promoting a value-driven sport. In its 2022-2025 strategic framework, the Council of Europe has established its priorities for sport: to advance human rights, the rule of law, and democracy in and through sport. How can techno-sport be included in this framework? How can athletes’ dignity, equality and freedom be effectively implemented when faced with disruptive technologies? Is the obligation to fair play transmittable and universal? Who has the duty to respect fair play in the age of ‘techno’ sport?
