The results of Italian translation and validation of the Beck Depression Inventory, second edition (BDI-II), will be explained in this article. The BDI-II is an improvement and a renovation of the first edition of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock e Erbaugh, 1961) and of its partial revision, according to DSM-IV diagnostic standards. The process of translation, administration, and data analysis on an Italian sample of 574 normal adults will be exposed. Total-item correlations were verified and they generally resulted high and significant, as in the original edition. An explorative and confirmative factor analysis has been made, with reliability analysis to test internal consistence. Data confirm that depression is characterized by two components: the mental one and the somatic one, as in the original edition. Internal consistence measured by Cronbach Alpha is 0.86 for the first factor, 0.65 for the second factor. These outcomes permit to conclude that BDI-II, in this translation administered to an Italian population, is comparable to the original edition.
