The international aid system in Niger is minimal. There are four transit centers operated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a specialized agency of the United Nations, for the voluntary repatriation of returning migrants. Migrants are registered and welcomed by IOM and UNHCR before their return to their countries of origin. Mental health is severely underestimated. In 2017, among other limited specific services, only one international NGO specialized in psychosocial projects and psychological well-being was operating. Psychiatric patients hosted at the General Hospital in Niamey live in inhumane conditions, abandoned in the most remote wing of an already dilapidated hospital, without adequate care or basic necessities, in extremely poor hygienic and sanitary conditions.
