We present the results of a Bond-Charge Model lattice dynamics calculation for the relaxed GaAs(110) surface and the chain reconstructed Ge(111): 2 × 1 one. In the first case our results show complete agreement with the experimental data for the full spectrum. In particular we point out the dynamical features that are sensitive to the structural characteristics of the surface. Since no experimental data exist for Ge(111): 2 × 1, we can only draw out a comparison with the dynamics of the similar Si(111): 2 × 1 surface. Furthermore, we extend the comparison to the GaAs(110) case, where an analogous chain structure gives rise to common dynamical features. © 1990 Pergamon Press plc.
