The evaluation of the subjective experiences associated with repetitive behaviors offers a novel approach to the study of the clinical phenomenology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Reported sensory phenomena encompass the so-called "premonitory urges" (first described in patients with tic disorders) and manifestations of sensory intolerance (high levels of distress evoked by common environmental stimuli across multiple sensory domains). Sensory intolerance has been described as a relatively common feature of patients with OCD and obsessive-compulsive-related phenomena, especially tic disorders. Treatment implications have particular clinical relevance for patients with tic-related OCD.
