Una scrittura pericolosa. Personaggi femminili che scrivono nella tragedia classica

The essay aims to reflect on the theme of access to writing by women in ancient Greece. At first, it recalls that the number of literate women was significantly lower than that of men, but stresses that it is necessary to consider many elements, such as the type of writ-ing support, the function, the representation of writing, and the social affiliation of women. In general, female writing and female culture are perceived in the ancient world as useless and dangerous. The essay then analyses the representation of female writing in classical theatre, highlighting how it is presented as a carrier of misunderstandings and misfortunes. Given the strong formative value of ancient theatre, it seems, therefore, to emerge a clear message of devaluation of female writing, presented as a dangerous artifice to avoid.

Il saggio si propone di riflettere sul tema dell’accesso alla scrittura da parte delle donne nella Grecia antica. Dapprima, ricorda come il numero delle donne alfabetizzate fosse netta-mente inferiore rispetto a quello degli uomini, ma sottolinea che occorre considerare molteplici elementi, quali il tipo di supporto alla scrittura, la funzione, la rappresentazio-ne della scrittura, l’appartenenza sociale delle donne. In generale, la scrittura femminile e la cultura femminile sono percepite, nel mondo antico, come inutili e pericolose. Il sag-gio analizza poi la rappresentazione della scrittura femminile nel teatro classico, metten-do in luce come essa sia presentata come portatrice di equivoci e di disgrazie. Data la forte valenza formativa del teatro antico, pare, dunque, emergere un chiaro messaggio di svalutazione della scrittura femminile, presentata come un pericoloso artificio da evitare.
