The paper investigates the tradition of the Krampus in the villages of Reschen and Mals in Vinschgau, comparing it to similar festivals and masquerades in the Alps and in continental Europe. In particular, it analyzes the relationship between tradition and invention, between local and global, with the aim of highlighting the new semantics and new functions of folkloric rituals, which are increasingly used in the identity (re)building process of the communities in which they are performed.

Abstract

The paper investigates the tradition of the Krampus in the villages of Reschen and Mals in Vinschgau, comparing it to similar festivals and masquerades in the Alps and in continental Europe. In particular, it analyzes the relationship between tradition and invention, between local and global, with the aim of highlighting the new semantics and new functions of folkloric rituals, which are increasingly used in the identity (re)building process of the communities in which they are performed.
