In this chapter, we map the public awareness of antibiotics and persistent false confidence to opine about this issue across Europe. We create aggregate indicators at the level of European regions and compare changes over time [1989-2018]. We also correlate awareness of antibiotics to general science culture as indicated by knowledge of, evaluation [promise & reserve] and engagement with science [known as the 3D+ or PREK model of attitudes to science]. Science culture and antibiotics awareness/false confidence covary across European regions, and this background defines the strategic and tactical contexts for more focused communication efforts.

Abstract

In this chapter, we map the public awareness of antibiotics and persistent false confidence to opine about this issue across Europe. We create aggregate indicators at the level of European regions and compare changes over time [1989-2018]. We also correlate awareness of antibiotics to general science culture as indicated by knowledge of, evaluation [promise & reserve] and engagement with science [known as the 3D+ or PREK model of attitudes to science]. Science culture and antibiotics awareness/false confidence covary across European regions, and this background defines the strategic and tactical contexts for more focused communication efforts.
