In this chapter the FUNOP, an automated procedures for detecting outliers, was presented as both general and accessible graphical technique in geosciences. The pattern of points in the plot suggest which observations should deserve “special attention.” It is noteworthy that the efforts of Tukey in detecting and dealing with outliers influenced succeeding Huber’s work on robust estimation (Huber 1964; Hampel 1991). However, we observe that, although presented in a fundamental article for the future of statistics, FUNOP is not very used in practice.

Abstract
In this chapter the FUNOP, an automated procedures for detecting outliers, was presented as both general and accessible graphical technique in geosciences. The pattern of points in the plot suggest which observations should deserve “special attention.” It is noteworthy that the efforts of Tukey in detecting and dealing with outliers influenced succeeding Huber’s work on robust estimation (Huber 1964; Hampel 1991). However, we observe that, although presented in a fundamental article for the future of statistics, FUNOP is not very used in practice.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
