In this chapter the logistic normal model, a follower of the additive logistic normal distribution compatible with the algebraic-geometric structure of the simplex, was presented as a general tool for distributional modeling of compositional data in geosciences. It is flexible enough to model data coming from a wide-ranging applications, providing a sensible alternative to the well-known Dirichlet distribution which is not fully compatible with the logratio approach (Pawlowsky-Glahn et al. 2015). For all these reasons, logistic normal is considered the main distribution for compositional data.

Abstract

In this chapter the logistic normal model, a follower of the additive logistic normal distribution compatible with the algebraic-geometric structure of the simplex, was presented as a general tool for distributional modeling of compositional data in geosciences. It is flexible enough to model data coming from a wide-ranging applications, providing a sensible alternative to the well-known Dirichlet distribution which is not fully compatible with the logratio approach (Pawlowsky-Glahn et al. 2015). For all these reasons, logistic normal is considered the main distribution for compositional data.
