The aim of this work is to reflect on some aspects of the explanations formulated in systemic-constructionist clinical psychology, an area which received little attention by philosophers of science, whose distinctive features will be described and exemplified by reference to a case-study. In particular, we will argue that systemic-constructionist explanations are chiefly based on generalizations which express regular connections between the origin of particular psychopathologies and specific aspects of the patient’s family context, and that there are strong connections between explanation and prediction there.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to reflect on some aspects of the explanations formulated in systemic-constructionist clinical psychology, an area which received little attention by philosophers of science, whose distinctive features will be described and exemplified by reference to a case-study. In particular, we will argue that systemic-constructionist explanations are chiefly based on generalizations which express regular connections between the origin of particular psychopathologies and specific aspects of the patient’s family context, and that there are strong connections between explanation and prediction there.
