The observations of light scattered both in the permitted and in the forbidden region from a very turbid sample placed at the glass interface were discussed. It was found that the wave front of a total internal reflected beam was perturbed by fluctuations in the region probed by the evanescent wave. The multiply scattered light originating from very turbid samples appeared only below the critical angle. Analysis shows the very weak scattered light above the critical angle was due to a double tunnel effect and was solely due to single scattering at the surface.

Abstract

The observations of light scattered both in the permitted and in the forbidden region from a very turbid sample placed at the glass interface were discussed. It was found that the wave front of a total internal reflected beam was perturbed by fluctuations in the region probed by the evanescent wave. The multiply scattered light originating from very turbid samples appeared only below the critical angle. Analysis shows the very weak scattered light above the critical angle was due to a double tunnel effect and was solely due to single scattering at the surface.
