The inclusion of a property in the UNESCO World Heritage List, established under the 1972 Paris Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, entails particular obligations of protection for the State on whose territory the property is located. The recent regional law of Sicily (October 2004) that, in derogation to the landscape plan, allows for the construction of eight hotels in the islands of Lipari and Vulcano could lead to the removal of the Eolian Islands from the List or to their inclusion in the List of the World Heritage in danger.
