The contribution examines the state’s role in the university system. Today, universities compete while the state steers at a distance (“regulatory state”). I highlight similarities with economic market regulation by independent authorities. I also discuss the meaning of autonomy: in the present framework, autonomy appears to violate the provisions in the Italian Constitution.
