According to the experience of the authors of this study, it appears clearly that the thymic state of the massive obese is actually affected by a surgical operation as important, for its consequences, as the intestinal by-pass or the gastroplastic one. Such operation, causing a quick aud notable loss of weight, also induces considerable consequences uuder the psychological point of view and in connection with the emotional sphere for the subjects applying to it. For their investigation about the variations of mood during the phases preceding and following the surgical operation, the authors availed themselves of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety and for Depression (HRSA and HRSD), applied to in four different times on a group of 22 patients. Regarding the evaluation of the obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, for each type of personality the patient to undergo the operation was investigated through the Leyton Obsessionnal Inventory (LOI). Such investigations were also carried forward, at the same time, on a group of anorexic patients (women) under medical therapy and this comparative study had the purpose of putting in light any possible characteristic common also to subjects suffering from pathological alimentation behaviour.
