This paper aims to present and discuss a comparative picture of the functioning and management of several European judicial systems on the basis of the indicators identified by the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ) in order to assess European judicial systems in terms of the degree of independence and accountability, both of the judiciary and the individual judge. The judicial systems subject to analysis (Italy, France, Hungary, Sweden and the Netherlands) present specific features and are representative of the diverse geographical areas of Europe.
