Perhydrotriphenylene (PHTP) has been extensively applied as a matrix in which a solid-state radical polymerization promoted by γ rays can be performed; in some instances the irradiated matrix itself acts as an initiator onto the included monomer. The e.s.r. spectrum of PHTP was resolved in its components due to two overlapping radicals, by exploiting their differing relaxation times. The main radical, stable under vacuum for a long time, was interpreted as the tertiary one and the conformation was compared to similar radicals in saturated cyclic hydrocarbons.

Abstract

Perhydrotriphenylene (PHTP) has been extensively applied as a matrix in which a solid-state radical polymerization promoted by γ rays can be performed; in some instances the irradiated matrix itself acts as an initiator onto the included monomer. The e.s.r. spectrum of PHTP was resolved in its components due to two overlapping radicals, by exploiting their differing relaxation times. The main radical, stable under vacuum for a long time, was interpreted as the tertiary one and the conformation was compared to similar radicals in saturated cyclic hydrocarbons.
