Starting from conclusive results obtained by BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) European Intercomparison on irradiated chickens. a critical revision of the analytical method reported by the Community protocol was performed. Chicken samples irradiated at known doses were used to evaluate a reference curve, then irradiated samples were analysed referring to the same curve; accuracy in the analyses of samples was greater than 20% in a 1 to 7 kG dose range (according to the recommendation of the Codex Alimentarius vol. XV). An enhancement of accuracy was observed with respect to analyses performed by the additive re-irradiation method (BCR recommended method), as well as a greater availability of instrumental facilities.
